Retail fit out for Minack Theatre, Porthcurno
A bespoke reception desk and box office for one of Cornwall's most iconic cultural landmarks. Built to withstand 230,000 visitors a year, with a clean ash and stone finish to match this clifftop theatre's unique setting.
The Brief
Minack Theatre is the world’s most dramatic open-air theatre, carved into the granite bedrock of a coastal cliff and fully exposed to the elements. It’s the jewel in the crown of Cornwall’s arts scene, so we were honoured when they approached us again for more work. To manufacture and install their newly designed box office/retail counter and their new cafe counter. WOrking with the interior designer we help develop the specification ont he materials and practically of the design.
The Solution
We manufactured the bespoke cafĂ© and box office counters in our Redruth workshop before bringing them to site, ensuring the finish and precision we’re known for without unnecessary disruption at one of Cornwall’s busiest visitor attractions.
Working to the designer’s specification, the hexagonal motif found on the theatre’s stage was worked into feature elements of both counters, finished in a concrete-effect clay to echo the raw, handmade character of the building itself. We also completed the kitchen area in whiterock throughout.
With multiple trades on site employed directly by the client, we made it our business to liaise closely with flooring, electrical, plumbing and decorating contractors throughout. It’s not always formally our responsibility, but in our experience good communication between trades is what keeps a project on track and on budget, and that’s something every client benefits from.
The result is joinery that feels rooted in the place, quiet enough to let the theatre and its extraordinary clifftop views take centre stage, while working hard for the staff and visitors who use it every day.
